Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are used for facial aesthetic treatments and are injected into the skin. They are designed to effectively reduce the appearance of unwanted wrinkles, contour and create volume, and to revitalise the skin. Dermal fillers are based on Hyaluronic acid which is a substance that naturally exists in your body. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that exists naturally in almost all living organisms. It binds water and can act as a lubricant, also important for the transport of nutrients and in regulating water balance in skin.

Dermal fillers are substance/gels injected beneath the skin’s surface to smooth wrinkles and add volume and contour. As the face ages, skin loses collagen and facial fat pads diminish and migrate, causing sagging and wrinkles. Dermal fillers can be used to plump up areas of the skin and fat helping restore appearance. The products are composed of stabilised hyaluronic acid (HA) which occurs naturally in the cells of the skin. It works by drawing in water and therefore augmenting the skin, thus reducing the wrinkle treated. It is by no means permanent and is totally biodegradable. Depending on what types of dermal fillers, results can last between one to two years. It is a great alternative to otherwise invasive surgery, which can carry greater risks, complications and downtime.

Having dermal fillers is an increasingly popular cosmetic procedure, with more people than ever choosing to use a growing range of different filler substances.

What can Dermal Fillers be used for?

There are several uses for Dermal Fillers, including:

  • Smoothing wrinkles and folds
  • Lines/crow’s feet at the corner of eyes
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Vertical lines above the top lip
  • Smile lines from the side of the nose to the corners of the mouth Lip enhancement
  • Adding fullness to the lip/skin border
  • Adding fullness to thin lips for a very natural look
  • Adding volume using thicker fillers
  • Filling sunken cheeks and weak chins
  • Filling acne and other scars Fillers can also be used in the upper part of the face to treat expression lines – for instance, crow’s feet or forehead lines.
What areas can be treated with Dermal Fillers?

Best Dermal Filler Areas The face loses volume and contour when we age, the bones and the soft tissue dissolve and contribute to appearance of sagging. Dermal fillers may be used to replace this volume loss and restore the structural support, giving the patient a more youthful appearance. The aim is to make the face more harmonious and rejuvenated.

For instance, the lips may be injected to improve their shape, size, symmetry and proportion. The cheeks may be injected to make a face more defined and attractive. An underdeveloped chin may be injected to make it appear more projected and proportionate. The nose may be injected to improve the shape and its contour.

What does the procedure entail and is it painful?

Generally, basic dermal filler procedures require no anaesthetic as the dermal filler contains local anaesthetic. It is simple and straight-forward, involving a few tiny injections directly into the skin, and takes between 15–30 minutes. Make-up can be applied immediately after the procedure and you can go straight back to work. Result can be seen immediately. Optimal results can be maintained over a long period of time through regular repeated treatments. The procedure varies from person to person depending on your requirements and the severity of the wrinkles that are being treated, in addition to the particular dermal filler being administered.

There may be a slight discomfort whilst the filler is being injected into the face but we minimise this by applying an anaesthetic cream before treatment. To provide further relief and alleviate as much pain as possible, our fillers contain a pre-mixed local anaesthetic.

How soon will I see any result and how long does it last?

Results are seen instantly after the treatment, although this gradually improves over the course of the following 2–4 weeks. Results can last between 9–18 months although optimal results can be maintained over a long period of time through regular repeated treatments. The longevity varies from person to person depending on your requirements and the severity of the wrinkles that are being treated, in addition to the particular dermal filler being administered.

Are Dermal Fillers safe?

Yes. We use only products with proven safety record. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance which occurs naturally in the cells of the skin, thus there is no risk of allergic reactions. Even people with food sensitivities can receive these fillers safely. The brands of Dermal Fillers we use are available in more than 90 countries and have been used as an injectable cosmetic treatment for more than two decades with an excellent safety record.

It’s easy for clients to confuse side effects to reactions, so it’s extremely important to understand what side effects can be expected. Temporary side effects – those that are completely normal after facial injections – can include; swelling, redness and tenderness.

It’s completely normal to experience a little bit of discomfort, redness and bruising after the procedure. Reactions generally occur immediately after the needle injection and can include; redness, swelling, pain, itching, bruising and tenderness at the injection location. These reactions are generally mild to moderate and usually disappear shortly after injection and are usually resolved a few days after the injection into the skin.

Are Dermal Fillers suitable for you?

As with any treatment involving the skin, injections should be avoided in areas where there is any swelling or infection. Dermal fillers have not, however, been tested in pregnant or breastfeeding women, and are therefore not advised.

Meanwhile, if you have a history of cold sores in the area to be treated, we may recommend that you take anti-herpes medicine before your treatment to help reduce the likelihood of an outbreak.

Preparing for treatment

At your first visit, you will have a detailed discussion with aesthetic practitioner about your expectations, the possible side effects, complications, what the treatment involves, pain control and aftercare.

We will also take your medical history, to make sure there is no reason why you should not receive the treatment. In addition, you will be asked to sign a consent form and we may also take photographs of you.

Is there a difference between Botox and Dermal Fillers?

Yes, there is 100% a difference between Botox and fillers. Botox stops the small muscles in your face from making the movements that cause wrinkles, whilst dermal fillers plump from below the wrinkle to smooth them out and promote the youthful look.

Cost Consideration

Cost depends on the type of dermal filler; amount dermal filler is required and the areas of the face you wish to be treated (e.g. undereye hollow and cheeks). During the consultation, we will formulate a treatment plan for you and advise the exact cost of your treatments. Our prices are competitive and your treatments will be carried out by an international expert. We believe our patients deserve the utmost safety in our care and we are committed to offering reliable, safe and effective results. Please refer to our price list.

Are there any after-care instructions?

After your treatment we will again go through with you any after care advice in order to maximise your treatment benefits and avoid any undesirable side effects.

You can resume normal activities, drive yourself home or return to work immediately after the treatment.

As with any type of injection there may be some slight redness immediately afterwards. Camouflage make up may be applied.

The results directly after the treatment should therefore not be seen as the final results. This is because over the following 2 weeks the results will gradually improve.
